I’ll say this upfront: painted sheet metal suppliers haven’t given me much reason to expect a lot.<\/em><\/p>\n I’ve been buying fabricated enclosures and structural parts for critical power equipment for a long time, and every supplier says the same things in the RFQ \u2014 on time, in spec, no drama. Almost none of them have delivered on it. I’ve been burned enough times by that sentence that I’ve stopped believing it as a sentence. I believe it as a track record, and only after I’ve watched it happen more than once.<\/p>\n I’m writing this because Keltech is the first fabrication partner in a long time that’s changed my mind about what \u201con time, in spec\u201d actually means in practice.<\/p>\n It’s never the fabrication that goes wrong. Every shop I’ve used could cut, form, and weld a competent enclosure. What went wrong was everything after that.<\/p>\n A batch would leave the fabricator’s floor for powder coating at a separate supplier, and disappear into someone else’s queue for two, sometimes three weeks longer than promised \u2014 with no one who could tell me why, because no one owned the whole part. Hardware would be fitted before coating, protected badly, and I wouldn’t find out a bracket was damaged until final assembly on my own site, at which point it was my problem, on my schedule, with my customer waiting.<\/p>\n Everything we buy from this sector goes into indoor installations \u2014 switchrooms, plant rooms, controlled environments. So the risk was never weathering or corrosion. It was simpler and blunter than that: could the finishing keep pace with the volume, or would it become the thing holding my whole programme up.<\/p>\n The single biggest change is that I stopped managing handoffs. Fabrication and powder coating happen in the same building, on the same schedule, under the same quality system. When I raise an issue, there’s one team that owns the answer \u2014 not a fabricator pointing at a coater and a coater pointing back.<\/p>\n But the thing that’s actually changed my thinking is throughput. I can put an order in for up to 30,000 individual parts a week, and I have yet to see the finishing become the constraint. Not once. In any other paint facility I’ve worked with, that volume would have caused weeks of backlog \u2014 busbar tap-off units and distribution parts queuing behind someone else’s batch while my commissioning date sat there, unmoved. That capacity headroom isn’t a small thing. It’s the reason I stopped worrying every time I placed a big order.<\/p>\n And I need it, because our volumes in this sector aren’t holding steady \u2014 they’re going up, and not incrementally. We’re now ordering multiples of what we used to order even a short time ago. Genuinely, I was worried about how any single supplier was going to absorb that. Keltech is the first one that’s made me stop worrying about it.<\/p>\n Three things I’ve noticed, specifically:<\/p>\n Power distribution and critical power equipment doesn’t tolerate \u201cmostly right.\u201d It ships to sites where a late or defective enclosure isn’t an inconvenience \u2014 it holds up commissioning on infrastructure someone else is depending on. And the programmes I run aren’t one-off orders; they’re recurring, they revise mid-build, and they need a supplier who absorbs that without renegotiating the relationship every time the spec changes.<\/p>\n That’s the thing I didn’t expect from Keltech: it’s not that they got one order right. It’s that order after order, change after change, I’ve stopped needing to double-check the finishing schedule myself.<\/p>\n I don’t say that lightly, and I wouldn’t put my name against a sentence like \u201crevolutionised the category\u201d if I didn’t mean it.
