2021 Leaving Cert student says “Don’t follow the crowd, let the crowd follow you.”

In Ireland 2 out of every 3 leaving cert students now opt to enter higher education. Anecdotally we can all identify with the stories of those individuals who have drifted into courses that in hindsight were never a fit.

This time last year a 17 year old Leah Murphy was preparing for the 2021 leaving cert in Ramsgrange Community School, Wexford. Fast forward 12 months and she has graduated from Keltech’s Welding Academy, gained an internationally recognised certification and is a key team member of our tank division welding reservoirs for some of the largest construction equipment manufactures in the world.

Leah starts “Most of my close school friends have went onto to further education. I actually got accepted for my 3rd level course of choice but when I really sat down and thought about it I decided that route wasn’t for me.” Leah was a good student excelling at technical subjects such as Art, Metalwork and Engineering. “I love working with my hands and creating things, I think that comes from working at home with my dad and helping him fix up agricultural equipment and tractors.”

Leah spotted one of Keltech’s posts advertising our Welding Academy. “When I looked into the company a little bit deeper and saw you were making stuff for the likes of Volvo, Manitou and Liebherr I applied immediately.”

Leah was instantly recognised as a top performer during her welding academy training says the Head of Welding Academy Jeff Imre (himself a Master Welder). “Leah’s talent was noticeable from day 1, however what surpassed her talent and impressed me more was her attitude; immense, a pleasure to have on the course and in the company in general”. At the end of the intensive programme all participants were independently examined and certified to ISO 9606-1, a welding qualification recognised the world over!

Leah Concludes “I have loved every minute here so far. The company has such a good culture; the training has been top class, people want to help you learn everyday, no expense has been spared on providing us with air fed PPE, Keltech branded welding gear, lifting aids and so on”

With a rye smile she says “Now I have turned 18 I can even work overtime”.
